Our Congressman in the House of Representatives is Albio Sires, who has represented the 8th District since 2006. Mr. Sires was born in Cuba and came to the U.S. when he was 10 years old as a refugee. He was raised in West New York and was a teacher and business owner before running for office. He first served as the Mayor of West New York, and later he became Speaker of the Assembly in the NJ State Legislature. Today, Congressman Sires serves on two Committees in the House: Foreign Affairs, and Transportation and Infrastructure.

Donald Payne, Jr. represents portions of Hudson, Essex, and Union counties. A Newark, New Jersey native, he has served the people of the 10th Congressional District since 2012. Rep. Payne, Jr. began his career in public service when he founded Newark South Ward Junior Democrats, becoming its first president. He also served as an adviser to the YMCA Youth in Government program. He attended Kean College (now Kean University), where he studied graphic arts. He currently serves on the House Committees for Homeland Security and Transportation & Infrastructure.

United States Senate


Bob Menendez is New Jersey's senior Senator and was appointed to the position in 2006 by John Corzine, who vacated the seat to become the Governor of NJ.  He was only the sixth Latino to serve in the US Senate at the time.  He grew up the son of Cuban immigrants in Union City and attended New Jersey's public schools and state universities, including Saint Peter's College and Rutger's School of Law in Newark, where he earned his J.D. degree.  He served as the Mayor of Union City from 1986 until 1992 and represented NJ's 33rd District in the State Assembly.  He was elected to the US House of Representatives in 1992, and served as Congressman to NJ's 13th District until his appointment to the Senate.  He was the Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in the 113th Congress, and today serves on the Committee for Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, as well as the Finance Committee.

Cory Booker is New Jersey's junior Senator, having won the seat in 2013 in a special election when Frank Lautenberg passed away in office. He was re-elected to a full six-year term in 2014. Prior to the U.S. Senate, he served on the City Council of Newark, and was later elected Mayor of Newark in 2006. He was raised in Harrington Park, NJ and still lives in Newark to this day. He received his undergraduate degree from Stanford University where he played on the varsity football team. While at Stanford, he also was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship and went on to study at the University of Oxford where he received an honors degree in History. He then completed his education at Yale Law School, receiving his J.D. in 1997. Today he serves on the following Senate Committees: Foreign Relations, Commerce Science and Transportation, Small Business and Entrepreneurship, and Environment and Public Works.
