Meet the Districts: NJ-05

This Week: Voltron in Person

First, do we have evidence that the Voltron will work?  Yeswe have evidence that the Voltron will work.

So, in addition to giving you updates on actions you can take in upcoming weeks to swing all 12 New Jersey congressional districts to the Democratic Party, NJ-08 for Progressive is proud to invite you to two events we are hosting in the next 8 days right here in the 8th district.

First on Monday, February 5th, we are hosting a meeting at 7PM at City Hall in Jersey City for all those interested in organizing for any and all of the 6 districts in play.  Winn Khuong, the Executive Director of Action Together New Jersey, will explain their Snowflake Organizing Model and help us form district-specific work groups.

And then, on Monday, February 12th, we will gather at 6:30 PM at the Brownstone Diner (also in Jersey City) to explore fundraising opportunities.  Marisa Kanof and Joe Telano from Swing Left will join us to lend their expertise to our efforts.

And finally, be sure to check out our Events Page for other important actions around the 8th District.

In this week's email, we also shed some light on New Jersey's 5th Congressional District.

NJ-05:  Represented by Democrat Josh Gottheimer
District Defense links:

New Jersey's 5th Congressional District is its most northerly, including all of New Jersey's land border with New York, and a decent bit of its border with Pennsylvania as well.  It stretches from the densely populated suburbs of Bergen County (including Bergenfield, Hackensack, and Paramus), through West Milford and Ringwood in Passaic County, into the the more rural Sussex and Warren counties (including Andover, Branchville, Newton, and Washington).

The 5th District is also the only one of New Jersey's seven Democratically-controlled districts that you will find on this list, as holding it will be essential to winning control of the House. First-term representative Josh Gottheimer narrowly defeated Republican incumbent Scott Garrett in November 2016, becoming the first Democrat to hold the seat since a single-term New-Deal-era Democrat was defeated in 1932.

Unsurprisingly in a district that went for Trump by 1%, Gottheimer has styled himself a centrist moderate, bragging about being named 2016's most bipartisan first-year representative.  However, he has voted against the Trump Regime when it counts.  With a Trump Score of 46.2%, Gottheimer opposed the Tax Scam, the 20-week abortion ban, TrumpCare, and laws gutting environmental protections and financial regulations.

Two Republicans have announced challenges to Gottheimer.  Far-right former Bogota mayor Steve Lonegan, whom the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee describes as an “anti-choice, anti-gay Tea Party bigot” seems to be the front runner, though the more moderate John McCann has also announced his intention to run.

See below for numerous opportunities, including canvassing and phone banking, that you can do to help Gottheimer keep his seat!
