Show Love with Money

As much as we may all hate it, running a political campaign in 2018 requires a lot of money.  And since progressive candidates cannot rely on support from many billionaire capitalists, that means we all must give a little to help them keep up.  Luckily, we have some great opportunities for you:

  • First, you can give a small donation to Swing Left's NJ-07 District Fund to support the eventual nominee to oppose Leonard Lance as part of their Valentine's Day #ShowBlueLovecampaign.  And while you're at it, use their provided texts and images to get your friends (including those you know only through mailing lists!) to donate as well.

And speaking of NJ-08 for Progress meetings, we are going to take a break from introducing our focus districts this week to share what we learned from Winn Khuong of Action Together New Jersey at last week's meeting.

Not Reinventing the Wheel

Though our energy for the #Voltron will remain, we must admit that much of the framework for flipping and protecting New Jersey districts has already been put in place by others.  This was only reinforced by our conversation last week with Winn Khuong of Action Together New Jersey, who explained to a room full of eager activists at City Hall in Jersey City the kind of work that is available through ATNJ.

Using the Snowflake Model of Organizing first pioneered by the Obama campaign, ATNJ seeks to activate volunteers by giving them roles that fit their particular availability and skill set.  The most important people, as Ms. Khuong explained, are those community members who go door-to-door within their voting districts to talk to their neighbors about the importance of voting and what is at stake.

So what can we, outside of these focus districts, do to help? Someone, of course, needs to find these community members and convince them to take on these roles.  Thus, those of us in the 8th and 10th districts can sign up to help get the message out.  The Snowflake needs people to do research, develop campaign messaging, create graphics, write letters to the editor, and spread all of this information on social media.

All you have to do is sign up to help, and ATNJ makes it easy.  Pick a district below, and complete the Google Form with your preferred role, then watch the opportunities develop!

Check out this event, locally for many of us in Jersey City, to see how this kind of organizing might work:
