Meet the Districts: NJ-11
Last week we introduced NJ-08 for Progress' contribution to November's imminent blue wave--the Progressive Voltron.
Over the next couple of weeks, NJ-08 for Progress will be hosting two meetings in Jersey City for all those who want to get involved in the efforts. We will have a general meeting on February 5th, at 7PM at Jersey City Hall, and a second meeting on February 12th at 6:30PM at the Brownstone Diner in Jersey City, focusing specifically on opportunities to host and promote fundraisers for candidates in the target districts. Keep an eye on our Events Page for more information on these meetings, and other great activist opportunities locally (NJ Together and #End287g actions coming soon!).
Speaking of those districts, over the next six weeks, in addition to sending updates on events and volunteer opportunities, we will be profiling all six districts we are hoping to turn (or keep!) blue. Today, we explore NJ-11.
Represented by Republican Rodney Frelinghuysen.
Due to the energetic activism of NJ 11th for Change, the district encompassing large parts of Morris County, plus areas of Sussex, Passaic, and Essex counties, including the municipalities of Morristown, Parsipanny, and Montclair, has garnered the most attention of all the New Jersey swing districts.
Rodney Frelinghuysen has represented the 11th district since 1994. He began his career as a classic northeast fiscal conservative with moderate social views, however over the years he has drifted, along with his party, further and further toward the right. In a district that Trump carried by less than 1%, Frelinghuysen has infuriated many of his constituents by voting with the administration over 90% of the time.
There are currently five candidates registered for the Democratic primary to challenge Frelinghuysen in November. Mikie Sherill is considered the front runner, having received numerous party endorsements. However, Tamara Harris, Mitchell Cobert, and Mark Washburne continue to run vigorous campaigns.
In these regular email updates, we will be providing information on upcoming events and volunteer opportunities in which we can all join.
