Since the gutting of the Voting Rights Act in 2013, a flurry of voter suppression laws have become a focus for the Republican platform. In key states, they’ve reduced the voting power of people of color and helped elect Donald Trump.
Continue to take action this September with NJ-08 for Progress in protecting everyone’s right to vote and ensuring our government truly represents the will of the people.
1. Tell Albio Sires to keep up his support of Voting Rights legislation.
First, make sure you know how to get to our NJ-08 Citizen Feedback form.
Then, use it to send a message of thanks to Representative Sires for his support of legislation that will protect and expand voting rights, such as the Voting Rights Advancement Act of 2017 (HR 2978) and the Voting Rights Empowerment Act of 2017 (HR 12).
And finally, ask him to join fellow New Jerseyans Bonnie Watson Coleman, Donald Payne, and Frank Pallone in co-sponsoring HR 1094, the Weekend Voting Act, which will expand election day into election weekend.
2. Tell your State Reps to vote for Voting Rights in New Jersey.
While Kobach gets the majority of the headlines, the biggest changes in voter access come from state legislatures. Currently, the New Jersey State Legislature is considering two bills that could result in major changes to the way New Jerseyans vote.
Tell your state representatives to support S613, a bill that would greatly expand voter access through early voting, expanded absentee ballots, and simplified online registration. And then, tell them to oppose A132, which would require all voters to present a valid government ID in order to vote.
